3. How to buy tickets online for coach travel within Britain
There are several simple ways:
- For most of the connections offered by National Express in the UK you can make a purchase through our journey planner, located on the front page. Just fill in all fields and follow the instructions.
- To purchase tickets online, you can do it directly on the National Express website. The National Express in journey planner shows all the names of larger and smaller towns, cities and airports.
- Types of ways in which the ticket is obtained:
- e-ticket: a ticket you must print yourself at home,
- m-ticket: a text message on your mobile phone,
- by collection: in one of the National Express office,
- by post: allow 7 working days.
Note: In some cases e-tickets and m-tickets may be not available for the journey, this happens when the connections are made with companies other than National Express. You can still buy a ticket online, but it will be delivered by post or it will be ready to collect in the offices of National Express.
4. How far in advance can you book a ticket?
Most National Express timetables are valid from the beginning of March until the end of February each year, this gives the possibility to book travel up to a year earlier.
5. Can I book an "open jaw" (a return originating from a different stop)?
(This option is not available online now) An open jaw return, sometimes known as a round trip, is one that takes you from A to B, but returns to or from a different location - C to A or B to C.
Please click here for a version of the journey planner which includes an open jaw booking facility for National Express services.
6. Is it possible to buy tickets online for travel within Britain while living outside the UK?
You can book e-tickets from anywhere in the world. Just follow the same instructions as in point No. 3, but the only form of delivery of the ticket is the e-ticket, it means that you have to print the ticket yourself.
7. A guide to the tariffs
Here are some of the fares offered by National Express:
Funfares - the cheapest tickets available only online on a limited number of routes. The earlier you book the ticket, the more likely it is that you get the lowest price.
Standard & Economy - what is the difference between Economy and Standard fare?
Standard fare is valid in the so-called peak traffic, ie when travelling in both directions falls on one of the following days:
- Fridays - all year round,
- Saturdays - in July and August,
- Christmas and New Year
- Apart from these days we get the Economy fare.
Advance Fare (Apex) is offered to customers who purchased tickets at least seven days prior to travel. Apex tickets are not refundable, but you can change your reservation.
8. How to find the cheapest journey available in National Express?
- The cheapest option to travel with National Express is to get the Funfare ticket (even for £1). If you are interested in finding more details for that fare click here:
- Another way to find the cheapest journey in the National Express is to buy a ticket at least 7 days prior to travel. You can get an Advance (Apex) ticket, cheaper than the Standard and Economy fares.
- Consider dividing the journey into sections, you can get a lower price, where the two tickets are cheaper than one: You'll sometimes find a situation where the fare from A to B plus the fare from B to C is less than the fare from A to C . As long as the coach stops at point B, you can use the ticket. For example, instead of buying a ticket for the full journey from Birmingham to Stansted Airport, you can save money by buying two tickets, one from Birmingham to Milton Keynes and the second from Milton Keynes to Stansted Airport. This is just an example of the method that could be used. It may be that; one leg is in the tariff Funfare, and the second in the tariff Advanced (Apex)
9. How to change the ticket?
Changes may be made before travel by calling National Express +44 (0) 8717 81 81 81. Opening hours: 08:00 to 20:00 from Monday to Saturday and from 10:00 to 20:00 on Sunday (UK time).
Callers must have the data from the credit / debit card. Please note that your reservation change may change to higher tariffs and an administrative fee will be charged.
